Journey to the West
by Mary Zimmerman

directed by Allison Arkell Stockman

Journey to the West is Helen Hayes Awards Recommended!

This ancient Chinese legend tells the story of a Buddhist monk who travels from China to India in search of sacred scriptures. A rambunctious monkey, an insatiable pig and a fierce river monster join Tripitaka, the monk, on his epic adventure. Imaginative spectacle, action sequences and live music intertwine to create a world that is part vaudeville, part mystical dreamscape. Playwright Mary Zimmerman's distinctive style has led to box office hits for Constellation in the past with The Arabian Nights & Metamorphoses.

Audiences & Critics Agree - Journey to the West is Spectacular!

Journey to the West is Helen Hayes Awards Recommended!

The Washington Post
>

"The pocket extravaganza from the sorcerers of 14th Street, Constellation Theatre. En route to a higher plane it confronts you with battles and rescues, gods and magic, much of it involving a hot-headed monkey."

"The show is like diving into the deep end of a colorful storybook pool."

"Swelling spectacle!"

DC Theatre Scene
>

4 out of 4 Stars

“To hear [Tom Teasley’s] inventive score live alone is worth the price of admission.”

"Tolentino gets the flashiest role of the acrobatic, antic-filled Monkey... The guy doesn’t ever just walk the whole evening; rather he crawls, leaps, cartwheels (sometimes one handed,) back flips, barrel rolls, fights, and otherwise flings himself around the stage... Monkey is the popular favorite and constantly delights."

"The show has many dazzling design and production elements, the kind of thing sine qua non that make the genre stand apart and appeal. Starting with a gorgeous set by A.J. Guban.... At the top of the show, the world glows sumptuously all red and gold under the masterful lighting of Colin K. Bills. The costumes by Kendra Rai are not only colorful but they masterfully allow the multiple quick changes for the ensemble to re-suit up and represent the seemingly hundreds of monkeys, mortals, monsters, and gods that the story requires."

Community Digital News >

"It's a spiritually refreshing voyage, and, in our age of moral relativism, it's very much worth the trip."

"Constellation's production of Journey to the West contains all the elements for which this small but dedicated company is renowned: an interesting set, an imaginative narrative, colorful costumes, occasional wild athleticism, dance pageantry and, last but not least, another evocative musical score composed and performed by that Washington musical treasure otherwise known as Tom Teasley."

Broadway World
>

"JOURNEY TO THE WEST is visually stunning and highly inventive production that features an expert ensemble of actors bringing both humor and humanity to an epic story."

"JOURNEY TO THE WEST exemplifies the best of ensemble work"

"Live, original music is knit into the DNA of Constellation Theatre and Teasley has been a significant part of that."

MD Theatre Guide >

"Journey is a delightful, action-packed show that will be a delight to young and old alike.

"No production reflects Stockman’s exciting artistic vision better than her latest effort, Mary Zimmerman’s epic play Journey to the West."

"Tolentino's energy and good humor are infectious and carry the show from start to finish."

DC Metro Theatre Arts
>

"The beauty of spectacle and the exotic intermingling of culture and style are on full display: colorful costumes, flowing and dynamic sets, some topical humor mixed with high oratory, and most especially the unique presence of one particular monkey."

Metro Weekly >

"The production starts off strong. A.J. Guban has designed an awe-inspiring set, this one framed by a tipped wooden ring sturdy enough for the cast to walk on or swing from. Director Allison Arkell Stockman has assembled a fine creative team to dazzle with sheer theatrical spectacle, ultimately led by the vivid, creative lighting design of Colin K. Bills, whose work consistently puts the right accent on Kendra Rai’s varied and whimsical costumes. Pauline Grossman’s choreography often evokes natural elements, from water to rough terrain. Tom Teasley supplements the action with an appealingly subtle, exotic and mystical soundscape."
