Mission

Constellation Theatre Company is dedicated to creating theatre that is epic, expansive and essential.

We adventure outside the staid, predictable realm of our everyday lives into an arena that is startling, magical and symbolic.

Constellation combines visionary, expressive design with heightened physical movement and elevated language.

Like bright lights in the dark sky, our shows will seek to illuminate the human experience in ways that are powerful, dynamic and relevant today.

History

Constellation Theatre Company's first production was the North American premiere of Caryl Churchill's adaptation of A Dream Play by August Strindberg. Presented at the Source Theater in June 2007, this "wildly ambitious" production featured an ensemble cast of eleven actors playing multiple roles. A Dream Play was received by critics as "brisk, accessible and surprisingly humorous", and Allison Stockman's directing was praised for its "atomic-clock timing and laserlike precision".

In September 2007, Constellation presented Mary Zimmerman's vibrant adaptation of The Arabian Nights at the Source Theater. This production featured the "propulsive beats and near-dervish presence" of musician Tom Teasley, as well AJ Guban's enveloping set covered in Persian rugs, Yvette M. Ryan's "sheer, colorful costumes". The talented ensemble cast of twelve actors transformed themselves into the many characters in Scheherezade's endless stories.

With the Source Theater currently undergoing construction and renovation, Constellation's next two plays will be presented at Washington Shakespeare Company's spacious Clark Street Playhouse in Crystal City, VA. Bertolt Brecht's classic morality tale The Good Woman of Setzuan will run March 27 - April 20th, followed by a new adaptation of Aeschylus' epic The Oresteia, running from May 9th to June 1st. Constellation will be delighted to move back to the Source Theater as a resident company in the fall, and will continue to present epic, expansive plays that support our mission.
